Texas is facing a shortage of rider coaches/instructors to teach those courses. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) are attempting to make up that shortage by recruiting more riders to become motorcycle instructors.

As part of this effort, TTI is conducting a study to learn more about new motorcycle instructors, from the time they become certified to train new riders through their first couple of years on the job. New motorcycle instructors who participate in this study will be contacted every few months for a short telephone or online interview about their experiences. Participants can earn up to $2000 over the two-year study timeline.

Eligible participants:

  • Are Texas residents
  • Are 18 years old or older
  • Are actively planning to take a course to become a certified motorcycle safety instructor in Texas
